Hello! I am so excited that you are here today! I have some fun projects to share with you using new die templates from Spellbinders™ Paper Arts that will be released at the Craft and Hobby Association Trade Show. Today I am excited to show you two new and truly unique die templates. The first is S4-381 Hearts & Flowers. These dies are "pop-up" dies created to only cut the flower petals & hearts so they can "pop-up" from your project to add dimension and interest. However the outer edges do not have cut-lines, so these edges will give you a beautiful embossed detail for your projects. The second die I want to introduce to you is S5-151 Basic Lattice. This die template will create an intricate and beautiful embossed lattice die cut that will complement any project.
Here is what I have created with the die templates I am introducing today.

To make the luminary, you will need:
- Two 8 ¼ x 6 ¾" pieces of pink cardstock
- One 4 x 4" square of pink cardstock
- Two 1 ½" strips of pink cardstock
- Four 4 ¼ x 6" pieces of pink cardstock
- Four 4 ¼ x 6" pieces of Cardstock Vellum
- S5-151 Basic Lattice
- LF-110 Grand Ovals #1 ( remember the smallest in the set is #1)
- S4-328 Foliage
- Green cardstock scraps
- Repositionable Tape
- Waxed Paper
To begin, score vertically 8 ¼ x 6 ¾" pieces of cardstock at 4" and 8". Then turn the cardstock 90 degrees and score at ¼" along the bottom. Pre-fold and snip so that your panels look like this…. (remember you can click on any picture to enlarge)
Now you will need to cut/emboss the “Windows” of your luminary. Position the Grand Ovals die and hold in place with repositionable tape being sure to position the Ovals in the center of the panel. Each panel has two sections and each section will need a “window”. Once you have cut/emboss all 4 windows you will need to apply Scor-Tape to the ¼" flaps on the side and along the bottom.
Now you will need to create the lattice vellum inserts for your window. Cut/emboss four panels using the S5-151 Basic Lattice out of the 4 ¼ x 6" pieces of cardstock. You will have some extra on each side that you can trim later. Here are some steps to help you cut/emboss the S5-151 Basic Lattice.
This die template was so easy to cut/emboss using the GC-011 Junior Set of plates. As you can see in this picture, the plates measure 8 ½ x 6". This means they are half the size of the regular cutting plates. The cutting/embossing sandwiches are the same as the large plates but here is a reminder of the cutting sandwich you will need to use in the Grand Calibur® from the bottom up –
- A-Base Plate
- Die Template with a piece of Waxed Paper on top
- Cardstock
- C-Cutting Plate
After cutting, proceed with embossing. Here is a reminder of the embossing sandwich you will need to use in the Grand Calibur® from the bottom up.
- A-Base Plate
- Die with cardstock still in it.
- Embossing Mat
- B-Embossing Plate.
I found that using the waxed paper with this die was a great help when removing the cardstock from the die template. Also, if this die does not cut completely in the first pass, you can turn the plates 90 degrees and run it thru the Grand Calibur® again!
Once you have cut the four panels, trim them to 4 x 6". Now it is time to attach the vellum to the back of the Lattice die cuts. Apply Scor-Tape along the four corners of the 4 x 6" pieces of vellum (pictured below), remove liner off the tape and attach the Lattice die cut to the front of the vellum.
To assemble the luminary, you will need to have these pieces cut/embossed and ready to go! You will see that I have also cut/emboss two 1 x 8" strips of pink cardstock using the E8-003 Classic Triple Scallop & E8-012 Classic Decorative Inserts Four. I scored these two strips at 4", pre-fold and applied Scor-tape along the bottom/outside.
Now remove the tape liner from the front of the Lattice panels and adhere inside the ovals. Then remove liner from side flap and adhere to second panel. Your luminary should look like this…..
Then you will remove the tape liner from the side flap and adhere it together to form the square. Like this…..
Then attach the 4 x 4" square to the bottom of the luminary. This will make the basic luminary. Adhere the Edgeabilities® strip into place and set your luminary aside. Now it is time to decorate the luminary.
To decorate the luminary, I used S4-381 Hearts & Flowers. This set of dies was designed to be used with Flower Soft. You can use them different ways to achieve different looks. To decorate my luminary, I chose to cut only (not emboss) the largest dies in the set. Here is what they look like after cutting.
Using scissors, I cut each flower out and glued two of them together. To one set of flowers I added some Peony Pink Flower Soft using Flower Soft glue. To the other set of flowers I added some Pearl Jellies using Scrap Happy Sheer Glue from The Rubber Café. I also cut/embossed some green leaf stems from S4-328 Foliage die template.
Using Beacon’s Advanced 3 in 1 craft glue, I decorated my luminary with my flowers. Here are a few close-ups.
To use this luminary, I purchased some battery-operated candles to place inside. Here is what my luminary looks like when lighted.
Here is another project I made using S4-381 Hearts & Flowers and S5-151 Basic Lattice.
As you can see, I used the S4-381 Hearts & Flowers die in a different way. After cutting/embossing but before taking the die from the cardstock, I traced around the die using a black marker. I then fussy cut around the marker lines to get the look I wanted! The traced lines just add another element to the card, don’t you think? I will have a tutorial on how I made this card next week.
