First I would like to start today by saying: Happy Birthday, Miss Melissa!! Hope you have a great day! Thank you for being such a great sitter for "my" boys.
Now back to the tutorial!!
This project is time-consuming but worth it if you need that little something extra gift for someone really special. I will start by saying that I absolutely did not come up with this idea/template. I found it at Lauren Meader's Blog - she is very talented and is a whiz at creating box and such. One thing is that her project uses the Scor-Pal. Now I don't have one of those and really, unless Stampin' Up! decides to sell them, I probably won't. So I set out to use my regular scoring tool in my paper cutter and make one of these great drink carriers. I want to add that this is one of the projects we made at my last PMS night - Pizza, Music & Stamping Stamp camp!
For this project you will need:
- Paper Trimmer with scoring blade
- Mono Multi Glue or other liquid glue you like
- Sticky Strip
- Corner Rounder
- Coluzzle Cutting System or other circle cutter
- Large Scallop Punch or other scallop circle cutter
- Versamark
- Silver Embossing Powder & Dazzling Diamonds Glitter
- Embossing Buddy & Heat tool
- Stamps - I used Snow Swirled!
- 2 Pieces of Cardstock cut to 4" x 11"
- 2 Pieces of cardstock cut to 3 1/2" x 11
- Scissors
Use the corner rounder to round the edges of your 4" x 11" pieces. This really makes it look nice, I think!
Then score both of these pieces at 3" as shown in picture. This forms the handles and bottom of this carrier.
After scoring, cut circles at the top to form the handle. Be sure they line up so when you go to glue everything together it matches! I cut one circle first using my coluzzle and then used that cut one as a guide to cut the second. Clear as mud? Set these two pieces aside.
Now its time to score the 3 1/2" x 11 pieces. Score down the long side 1/2" on ONE side. See how I used the right side of my cutter. Its hard to score just 1/2" on this style of cutter but once I learned my ruler math, I figured this out, LOL. Remember, these two pieces will be scored at 1/2" on ONE side only. This will form the flaps need to make the box part of the carrier.
Next, turn the 3 1/2" x 11 piece 90 degrees and score at 1/2", 3 1/2", 7 1/2" and 10 1/2".
Using your scissors, snip from the bottom edge to the 1/2" score line to form the flaps like in the picture. Both pieces of 3 1/2" x 11 should look like my picture.
I decided I wanted to emboss some snowflakes on this carrier so I mixed some Silver Embossing Powder with Dazzling Diamonds glitter in equal parts. This gives the silver embossing powder an iridescent look that I really like! I just mixed it in a gladware container and marked in on the top what it was. Remember that alittle goes along way so you don't really need to mix much.
Do not forget to use your Embossing Buddy before you start. This will take away any static cling so that no stray bits of embossing powder sticks where it shouldn't. This is one of my must-haves! If you don't have one, you really need one NOW!
Here is my pieces after I embossed them. I avoided the flaps and the bottom part that has the cut outs!
Its time to glue everything together. I use Mono Multi glue because I think it is alittle more forgiving but really strong. I don't have good luck with Sticky Strip in this case because you have to work it together. Here is how to glue the pieces together. You are making two seperate carriers and then you will glue them together to make a big one.
Starting with the right side down and at the first score line, glue it into place. Apply more glue as you go around.
Your carrier should start looking like this.
The bottom of your carrier will look like this!
The back of your carrier should look like this.
Here are your two carriers. Now its time to glue them together. For this, I used Sticky Strip because it holds alittle stronger than the Mono Multi. Just a personal preference on my part because either will work.
Once both pieces are together, its time to decorate them the way you want. Now the bottom doesn't look all that great, so you could cut a piece of cardstock to cover.
After all my careful measuring, the holes didn't quite line up. So to fix this problem, I punched out 2 large Scallops out of Brushed Silver cardstock and then using my Coluzzle cut holes in the middle. I put these over the holes to add something extra but it also hid the not lining up part too.
Here is the side of my carrier. I cut the Silver mat to 2 1/2" x 5 3/4" and the white mat is 2 1/4" x 5 1/2". I embossing the snowflakes and stamped the sentiment in Not Quite Navy. I did this for both sides.
This is all the instructions I have for you. You should make a "pratice" one first just so you have a feel for it. I am giving this one to Cassie's teacher. One side has the chocolates in it, the other side will have a "to go" cup with a package of cocoa, a couple of cookies and a peppermint stick. But first I have to go to the store to buy the cups, LOl!!
Here is a drink carrier that I made that I had an issue getting my circles to match. I finally just gave up and cut them off about half way down. Then using my Key Hole Punch I made a handle. Now in this carrier I would put cookies or candy. Just not something that weighs a bunch. But its a happy accident if I ever saw one!! Edited to add: Check out this link to another great drink carrier idea!! WOW! Everyone has such great ideas this time of year, don't they?
